On Tuesday, 16th April I had the pleasure of participating in one of the Ċine Xjenza events organised by Spazju Kreattiv, S-Cubed, and the Malta Chamber of Scientists. The film shown was ‘The Theory of Everything’, and we discussed aspects of Stephen Hawking’s work on Black Hole Theory and the Universe at large. Previous Next
On the 4th of April I was invited by the Department of Classics & Archaeology of the University of Malta to give a talk, both for members & students of the department and the general public, about a favourite topic of mine: the history of celestial navigation, i.e. how cultures have, for hundreds of years, utilised celestial objects to find their way at sea. Below follows the description of the talk…
The Gozo College Primary School have been celebrating Space Week. It was great fun visiting these inquisitive minds – amongst whom there are future scientists – to talk to them about all things space. A few pictures of the event, courtesy of the school, are found below.
Yesterday I had a lovely time talking to people about my favourite site in the world: the dark sky heritage area of Dwejra in Gozo. This talk was part of the ‘Cafe Scientifique Gozo’ series, organised by the energetic Colleen Bower. The talk covered various topics, from the natural wonders of the site to its human history, underwater beauty, and, of course, its starry skies. A few pictures courtesy of…
Recently, the Gozo College Middle School asked me to talk about careers in science as part of a Teen Science Cafe event. The students had the opportunity to learn about aspects of an astrophysicist’s job, ask questions they had always been curious about, talk about their engagement with science at school and beyond the classroom, and learn about paths to a career in science. As always, it was a pleasure…
Yesterday evening, a number of us held an astronomy night at Dwejra for the general public, with the aim of observing the Perseid meteor shower. It is a much-loved semi-annual fixture (depending on the moon phase), and this year we were rewarded with a number of bright ones. By ensuring places like Dwejra stay dark, we can all continue to enjoy such breathtaking views of our night sky – a…
This week, the radio science programme ‘Radio Mocha‘ focussed the physics of diving and underwater exploration. In the interview with Danielle Farrugia, I spoke about the various physics concepts that come into play underwater.
Thousands of people flocked to St Elmo in Valletta to join us in observing the total lunar eclipse. The response was overwhelming. Below I am posting some pictures from the event.
Yesterday I had the pleasure to give a talk for the Malta Humanist Association (MHA) with the title “Astronomy and the Search for Meaning“. Below you may find a description of the topic of the talk, followed by some pictures (courtesy of the MHA). Description The Malta Humanist Association is proud to present its next public event titled “Astronomy and the search for meaning.” Presented by Dr. Joseph Caruana, Astrophysicist…
